IFTA Fuel Tax Calculation Formula
Tax Due = Amount of fuel tax owed to the state
Gallons Purchased = Total gallons of fuel purchased in the state
Tax Rate = State’s fuel tax rate per gallon
IFTA Reporting: The International Fuel Tax Agreement requires quarterly reporting of miles traveled and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.
Net Tax Calculation: Actual IFTA calculations compare fuel used (miles ÷ MPG) vs fuel purchased in each state. This simplified calculator uses purchased gallons for basic estimates.
Frequently Asked Questions
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is an agreement among US states and Canadian provinces to simplify the reporting of fuel taxes by interstate carriers.
Who must file IFTA:
- Commercial vehicles with 3 or more axles
- Vehicles weighing 26,001+ pounds
- Vehicles with a combined weight of 26,001+ pounds
- Vehicles traveling in at least 2 IFTA jurisdictions
Quarterly returns are required even if no miles were traveled during the quarter.
This calculator provides a simplified version for quick estimates. Actual IFTA calculations involve:
- Fuel Used Calculation: (Total miles in jurisdiction ÷ Total MPG) × Tax rate
- Fuel Purchased Tracking: Actual gallons purchased in each jurisdiction
- Net Tax Due: Tax on fuel used minus tax already paid through purchases
Example: If you used 200 gallons in State A (based on mileage) but only purchased 150 gallons there, you would owe tax on the 50-gallon difference.
Proper record-keeping is essential for accurate IFTA filing:
- Distance Records: Mileage by jurisdiction (odometer readings, trip sheets, GPS data)
- Fuel Receipts: All fuel purchase receipts showing gallons, price, date, location
- Vehicle Information: Unit numbers, vehicle identification numbers
- Quarterly Summaries: Total miles and gallons by jurisdiction
Records must be maintained for 4 years and be available for audit at all times.
IFTA penalties can be significant and include:
- Late Filing Fee: $50 or 10% of net tax due (whichever is greater)
- Interest Charges: Prime rate plus 6% on overdue taxes
- Audit Assessments: Additional taxes if discrepancies are found
- License Suspension: Possible suspension of IFTA license for repeated violations
Important Dates: Returns are due on the last day of the month following each quarter (April 30, July 31, October 31, January 31).
State fuel tax rates vary significantly across the United States:
- Highest Rates: Pennsylvania ($0.576/gal), California ($0.539/gal), Washington ($0.494/gal)
- Lowest Rates: Alaska ($0.089/gal), Missouri ($0.173/gal), Mississippi ($0.184/gal)
- National Average: Approximately $0.25-$0.30 per gallon
Rates change frequently as states adjust for infrastructure needs. Always verify current rates with state tax authorities before filing.
Some states also have additional local taxes, environmental fees, or inspection fees that increase the total tax burden.
